Pao-Tao pictorial rug
Chinese Pao-tao rug in full pile, with lustrous wool. Woven about 1900, this piece depicts a mythical bird, the phoenix (a symbol of peace and happiness) in this case with a rooster’s head and a peacock’s tail. Such rugs were often commissioned to be given as presents to mark auspicious anniversaries. Note the magic mushrooms at the base.
